FCC Ecclesfield, operated by FCC Environment, is in Ecclesfield to the north east of Sheffield. The site is one of 4 in the UK (PDF) with the necessary permits to handle radioactive liquid fracking waste. The permit for FCC Ecclesfield (EPR/ZB3395DX) sets a daily 2.57 million becquerels accumulation limit and 2.74 million becquerels disposal limit for Uranium group radionuclides, including radium-226 which is the most common in fracking waste. These limits are a 1/6 (accumulation) and 1/2 (disposal) of those at FCC’s Knostrop site in Leeds. Waste would be transported from fracking sites by tanker, “treated” and then passed by sewer to the Blackburn Meadows Works (Yorkshire Water) before being dumped into the River Don. The site has been mentioned as a potential dumping site by Ineos but could be also be used by other fracking companies, such as Cuadrilla Resources. See: Fracking Impacts – Fracking Waste
