In January 2017 contractors (AE Yates Ltd) working for Cuadrilla Resources moved in on land where it has permission to construct the largest fracking development in the UK. Cuadrilla have constructed an access road and a large frac pad on fields north of Preston New Road and are now drilling two horizontal shale wells. Local communities are massively opposed to this invasion, which has been force through by central government, and are mobilising to resist.

Cuadrilla Resources wants to construct the UK’s first multi-well shale gas frack pad at Preston New Road near Little Plumpton in Lancashire. The pad is planned to have 4 horizontal shale gas wells, which would be fractured in 30-45 stages along their up to 1.25 mile length. Cuadrilla envisage using between 5.9 and 8.9 million gallons of water to hydraulically fracture each well and in total the site will produce over 13.3 million gallons of radioactive waste which will be dumped in an unspecified location. Cudrilla’s plans require over 20,000 vehicle movements during the life of the site, peaking at up to 100 vehicle movements per day. The good news is that Cuadrilla was hemorrhaging cash before they even started pad construction and need to not only demonstrate the it is technically possible to exploit the Bowland Shale but that it is economically possible in the face of massive opposition. Without billions more in investor cash this is Cuadrilla’s last stand. Over the last five years communities across the country (and beyond), from Balcombe and Barton Moss to Belcoo and Woodburn Forest, have made sure that the frackers think twice about coming back. See New Lancashire Threat: Cuadrilla`s Fracking Plans for more information about Cuadrilla’s plans in Lancashire. The proposed fracking site is on fields north of Preston New Road just east of Little Plumpton, just to the east of the World Of Water Aquatic Centre (see map on right).
