Belcoo Community Fracking Blockade (Ireland)

Update May 2019 – Tamboran has made an application for a new Petroleum Licence covering a large area to the west of Upper Lough Erne and south of Lower Lough Erne. >Newspaper Report<  >Consultation<

In 2015 Tamboran Resources tried to drill a shale gas exploration well at Belcoo near Enniskillen in Fermanagh. The shale exploration well, for which Tamboran was initially not required to obtain planning permission, would be the first drilled in Ireland. Tamboran planned to drill the well, which is targeted on the Bundoran Shale, to a depth of around 750m. A camp was set up outside the site and the community got organised to resist Tamboran’s plans. After massive community pressure the NI government caved and required Tamboran to seek planning permission, and as a result of being unable to drill the well Tamboran has lost its licence. However Tamboran is planning to challenge this in court. The fracking site is in an abandoned quarry north of Gardrum Road behind the main Acheson & Glover quarry in Belcoo (see map below).
