  • Used nuclear bombs at bottom of wells
  • 3 tests in US in late 1960s/early 1970s
  • Gas turned out too radioactive to sell
  • Massive hydraulic fracturing now used
  • Comparible amounts of energy expended
  • 16 well pad similar to Hiroshima bomb
  • Takes weeks rather than an instance
  • Damage to geology will be similar though

Fracking around with the law

  • Fracking trial has throw up many legal issues
  • Licences don’t appear to allow for fracking
  • Strategic environmental assessment not done
  • Planning applications duplicitous and probably illegal
  • Lack of environmental impact assessments
  • No consultation at any stage of process
  • In US changed law, in UK just ignoring it
  • Government more concerned with PR than regulation
  • Impossible to regulate even if there was anyone who wanted to

  • Driven by psychological need for an easy solutions
  • No evidence that it is actually practical
  • Would require massive and complex system
  • Combines multiple unproven processes
  • CO2 unlikely to stay underground for long enough
  • Could not stop global warming even if it worked
  • Number of pilot projects recently cancelled
