This application, if approved, may set a precedent for multi-well oil extraction in a UK National Park and is a significant element of UK Oil & Gas Investments (UKOG) plan for unconventional exploration and field development across the Weald & Wessex Basins.

UKOG has announced that a planning application has been submitted to the South Downs National Park Authority for the appraisal and development of the company’s conventional Markwells Wood oil discovery, located near Rowlands Castle in West Sussex.
UKOG’s proposed Markwells Wood development would consist of the drilling and extended production testing of a new horizontal sidetrack appraisal well from the existing borehole. If successful a second phase of up to three further horizontal production wells and a water injection well would be undertaken. These wells have conventional targets but they also pass through the Kimmeridge Clay and Lias shale layers (p14).
These plans represent a significant expansion of UKOG’s exploration activity in the Weald & Wessex basins. This scheme will allow UKOG to develop a revenue stream from a conventional source while gathering more geological data to assist with exploration/extraction from unconventional tight oil reserves.
