Don’t Believe The Hype – Bans & Moratoria Cause Major Problems For Community Campaigns
Communities in Germany, France & Scotland are battling to stop test drilling, seismic surveys and the issuing of licences right now!!! Government proclamations (which can be reversed in a moment) do nothing but put people in threatened areas back to sleep. The problem with bans & moratoria is that they make people believe that something has happened… when it hasn’t…
The German government has a proposal to ban fracking for shale gas for five years (to be decided on Friday 24th June), but will allow test drilling to be carried out if state governments permit it and they currently do!!! Up to four fracking research projects for shale (gas and oil) and coal bed methane – throughout Germany – will be allowed. At the moment the federal state of Lower Saxony (where the oil and gas industry is located and really active in Germany) is the only area where production will be interrupted by the ban.
In France between 7,000 and 15,000 protesters, attended an anti-fracking protest on February 28 2016 in the small town of Barjac. They turned out in response to the decision made by the administrative court of Cergy Pontoise to re-award to Total a 4,327 km² permit. Community groups in France are having to overcome all kinds of fracking industry spin to keep up the fight.
In Scotland community groups are still fighting to spread the word and engage communities as the threat from Coal Bed Methane & Shale Gas has not gone away. The governments moratorium “research programme” as of last October also included plans for test drilling!!!
