Anti-shale-oil Protesters Arrested for Blocking “Bomb Trains” in Washington State
Over 100 people stopped rail traffic by forming a human blockade across the tracks. Police arrested 21 people who refused to vacate the tracks. The action had been called to highlight the massive rise in oil train activity in the Pacific Northwest. This action followed a Union Pacific train carrying Bakken crude that derailed in Mosier, Oregon, in early June, spilling about 42,000 gallons of oil. Some of that oil ended up in the Columbia River.
The U.S. Fracking industry has far reaching impacts that extend beyond drilling areas. The transportation of oil & gas by road, rail and pipeline is increasing and is increasingly hazardous to communities.
