Water Company removes drinking water sources from main Belfast supply due to risk from oil & gas exploration
NI Water has closed two reservoirs in Carrickfergus amid fears of toxic contamination of the water supply to thousands of homes, the Belfast Daily can reveal.
Stop the Drill Campaigners said tonight that they are not surprised by NI Water’s move saying it has warned of the potential before drilling even started.
Oil and Gas company InfraStrata plan to commence drilling beside a major Belfast water reservoir (North Woodburn Reservoir) with no Waste Management Plan in place. A movement of people is growing, reclaiming the forest and reclaiming their right to safe and clean drinking water.
“Infrastrata have absolutely no social license to carry out their deep drilling in the forest, we on the other hand have the support of both the local and the wider community. We have the passionate support of the local Woodburn community and the wider support of greater Belfast via a motion which was passed by Belfast City Council last September. We will continue opposing this development until it is stopped. We will continue to do this peacefully and with dignity.
