Fracking Myths Debunked – U.S Emissions Cut By Recession
Fracking did not reduce U.S greenhouse gas emissions. It was the economic downturn that hit energy consumption and emissions across the board. A recent study published in Nature confirms our 2011 blog
“Before 2007, rising emissions were primarily driven by economic growth. After 2007, decreasing emissions were largely a result of economic recession with changes in fuel mix playing a comparatively minor role.”
Fracking Worst Than Coal for Climate
‘Fugitive Emissions’ of methane, a potent greenhouse gas leaking out of gas wells, pipelines and compressor stations may total over 10 percent of production. This makes fracking worse than coal in terms of climate change on a 20 year time scale. There is a growing body of evidence to suggests that even conventional natural gas is as bad for climate as coal due to methane leakage. See the latest research here: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/
Emissions Are Global
Coal & Oil displaced from the U.S will ultimately be burned by China and other countries making any individual nations claims on emission reduction farcical.
