The Kings Cliffe Landfill (also known as the “East Northants Resource Management Facility”) near Peterborough, operated by hazardous waste company Augean, is one of the few landfill sites in the UK presently allowed to accept low-level radioactive waste. The site has been mentioned as a likely destination for solid radioactive waste from fracking wells.
Augean obtained planning permission for a hazardous waste landfill in 2006 and subsequently applied to dispose of low-level radioactive waste at the site. After strong protests from residents the county council rejected the plan, but Augean appealed to central government and in 2011 the secretary of state approved the plans.
In November 2012, Peterborough City Council granted the site permission to continue operating the site until December 2028. In 2014 Augean submitted plans to try to reduce the risk of leaks in the long-term. Augean is now trying to double the size and is presently trying to acquire the necessary environmental permit.
