Fracking Companies Self-Regulate – UK Onshore Regulation Capacity Is Minimal
Claims that UK regulators know what they are doing, understand fracking or have the capacity to monitor 100’s of fracking sites are ridiculous. The UK has limited experience with onshore oil & gas drilling with only about 20 conventional oil and gas wells drilled onshore each year. Offshore, 10,000 wells have been drilled in the North Sea but this number is still dwarfed by the number of wells needed to supply the UK with gas from unconventional wells.
3,000 new onshore wells would need to be drilled and fracked each and every year to supply the 3 trillion cubic feet of gas used in the UK annually. Drilling more wells and using more energy to produce less gas makes no sense! Making next year’s energy last 10 years would be a more pragmatic aim, but with a financial system based on debt, in a world hooked on growth, inevitable collapse is preferable???
