The concern is that this ‘specialist industrial sand’ is silica, which is used as an essential ingredient in fracking. Sibelco supplied Cuadrilla with sand from quarries in this area for their first frack back in 2011. These quarries are looking to expand and increase production at the same time as new fracking sites have been given the go-ahead in Lancashire.
