Local anti-fracking group, Afan-Nedd Against Fracking, are mobilising in the area and have already organised a series of large public meetings and protests outside the planning hearing.

On 20th January 2015, fracking company UK Methane applied for planning permission for a well which will target both the Coal and Shale formations at a site near Pontrhydyfen. An earlier application for the same development was rejected by Neath Port Talbot Council over noise level concerns. This is a significant application in that it is the first ever well to target shale in Wales.
