The UK’s First Anti-Fracking Community Group Stops Fracking Site
Back in 2011 when speculative fracking outfit Cuadrilla Resources started drilling sites across Lancashire, the UK’s first andti-fracking community group was formed. Ribble Estuary Agains Fracking (REAF) got organised to oppose Cuadrilla’s drill site on farmland surrounded by fields of cabbages and an RSPB reserve.
The group have doggedly pursued Cuadrilla for nearly 7 years and now finally the site is being abandoned and returned to fields. The site at Banks gained notariety as the drill rig was occupied and a Shale Gas Conference in London was targeted all on the day that Cuadrilla admitted that it’s frcking activity near Blackpool had caused earthquakes.
The group is still active and as Cuadrilla again tries to push ahead with plans to frack at Preston New Road they continue to work with other community groups across the North West to kick the frackers out.
