Surrey shale exploration a warning for the South East
Fracking company UK Oil and Gas Investments (UKOG) have stated that the proposed well in the Surrey Hills would provide a further valuable “proof of concept” step in UKOG’s plans to exploit the Kimmeridge Clay for shale oil. This threatens the drilling of thousands of wells across the Weald. The British Geological Surveys estimateswell over a thousand wells while those from UKOG, based on data from Horse Hill, might require over 3000 wells.
Permission was granted in August for drilling near Leith Hill after a government inspector overturned Surrey County Council’s original refusal.
Sutton and East Surrey Water director Lester Sonden said concerns remained over the future monitoring of the site. Mr Sonden said it would mean drilling through water-bearing greensand rocks, running parallel to the M25, from which Sutton and East Surrey extract water. If the aquifer became polluted the water source would have to be abandoned.
