5 years of community campaigning has done the job. Massive marches and community blockades backed by information nights and documentaries, gas-field free surveys and declarations, Knitting Nannas ‘knit-ins’ and a host of other community based actions.
Coal seam gas (coal bed methane) exploration and extraction will cease in NSW’s Northern Rivers and north coast district after shareholders of Metgasco reluctantly accepted a $25 million settlement from the NSW government to buy back their licence. The New South Wales State Government has now cancelled or bought back the last of the petroleum exploration licences (PELs) in the region. The minister announced Metgasco’s 3 PELs are now “dead and buried”.
