Solidarity Weekend At Upton Anti-Fracking Camp
November 28, 2015 @ 9:00 am - November 29, 2015 @ 5:00 pm
ITS ON! Let the eviction preparation and nationwide anti-fracking solidarity begin! The camp needs support and new people all the time – but if you dont live locally or can only give a small amount of time – come along on the 28th and 29th of November for a massive weekend of eviction preparation.
The weekend has been called as a national day of solidarity, so numbers should be good. This is a great opportunity for your group to meet and make connection with other communities fighting fracking nationwide and get some first-hand experience of what a camp and an eviction process means for a community. People will be building tree-houses, digging tunnels, making scaff-towers and all manner of other things including banner making and just getting a chance to spend some time at the camp with residents. What’s not to like?! Bring stuff to camp, keep warm and stay dry.
The camp is the longest running anti-fracking camp in the UK. It occupies land on Duttons Lane where energy company IGas has all planning permissions in place to drill an exploratory unconventional gas well to sample both the coal bed and the much deeper Bowland shale. The vast majority of the local community and the camp residents are strongly opposed to the drilling and have vowed to continue their fight despite the court ruling. A survey has shown 85% of the residents within 2km of the drill site do not want fracking in Upton.
Fracking company IGas are desperate to get drilling as their planning permission for the site runs out in May 2015. The camp has been on a site licensed to fracking companies Dart Energy and IGas for well over a year. It’s presence has defended the community from becoming a regional foothold for the industry. Right now the community needs all the help and support they can get, expect numerous events and calls for action in the coming weeks. Now is the time to stand up and be counted if you do not want our region turned into gas field.
